First established in 1968, Mutya ng Pilipinas is an iconic pageant celebrating the beautiful Mutyas or jewels in the Philippines. The pageant is a stage that highlights the beauty of the Philippines’ natural gems—its unique archipelago, the diverse flora and fauna, pristine beaches and islands, impactful ethnic-inspired creations, bayanihan, amazing food, and the Filipino people.
The Mutya ng Pilipinas Organization exists to raise the bar of Philippine pageantry, as a platform where beauty queens are showcased as empowered women—driven with a sense of purpose, and a passion to make a difference.
Evolution and Key Milestones
- Early Years (1968-1983): The pageant was originally named “Miss Asia Quest Inc.” and its main purpose was to promote tourism. It held the franchise for several international pageants, most notably Miss Asia Quest.
- The Miss Asia Pacific Quest Era (1984-2004): In 1984, the pageant expanded its international scope to include countries and territories across the Pacific. It was renamed “Miss Asia Pacific Quest,” and the national competition was managed under the same umbrella. During this period, Mutya ng Pilipinas also held the franchise for the Miss World pageant from 1977 to 1991.
- Becoming an Independent National Pageant: In the early 2000s, Mutya ng Pilipinas became an independent national pageant under its own corporate name, Mutya ng Pilipinas, Inc. This period marked a new focus on its national event and the creation of its own international brand, “Miss Asia Pacific International.”
- Inclusion of Overseas Filipino Communities: Starting in 2001, the pageant began including representatives from overseas Filipino communities, a move intended to celebrate Filipino roots and elevate the competition’s level.
- Pageant Titles and International Franchises: Over the years, Mutya ng Pilipinas has awarded various titles to its winners, who then represent the Philippines in international competitions. Some of the international pageants it has held franchises for include:
- Miss Asia Pacific International: The pageant’s main international affiliate for many years, producing multiple winners from the Philippines.
- Miss Tourism International: Mutya ng Pilipinas has had great success with this pageant, with several Filipina queens winning the international title.
- Miss Tourism Queen of the Year International: Another international pageant where Mutya ng Pilipinas titleholders have achieved significant wins.
- Miss Intercontinental: The organization has had a long, but sometimes intermittent, relationship with this pageant, most recently regaining the franchise in 2023.
